Application for Reissuance of Residence Card in Case of Loss

If your Residence Card is lost, stolen, or destroyed, you must apply for reissuance within 14 days from the date you became aware of the loss.

※If you lose it while outside Japan, the application period is within 14 days from the date you first re-enter Japan thereafter.


Procedure Flow

  1. Submit a lost property report or theft report to the nearest police station or police box (Koban) and obtain the report acceptance number (Todokede Juri Bango). (The report acceptance number is required when applying for reissuance.)

  2. Apply for the reissuance of your Residence Card at the Regional Immigration Bureau that has jurisdiction over your place of residence.


Required Documents

  • Passport or Certificate of Status of Residence

  • Application for Reissuance of Residence Card

  • Photo ()

  • Statement regarding the loss or theft. (In cases of loss or theft, you must report it to the police and obtain a report acceptance number.)

※Depending on the details of your application, you may be asked to submit a Certificate of Lost Property Report or similar documentation.

  • If you cannot present a passport (or Certificate of Status of Residence):

A letter of reason detailing why you cannot present it

  • If you are applying after the application deadline (more than 14 days after becoming aware of the loss):

A document stating the reason for the delay, etc.


When Simultaneously Requesting Kanji Name Notation on the Residence Card

  • Notification of Kanji Name Notation on the Residence Card

  • Documents proving that Kanji is used for your name in your home country


Fee

There is no fee for the application for reissuance of a Residence Card due to loss, theft, or destruction.


Processing Time for Reissuance

In principle, the Residence Card is issued on the same day.

However, depending on the application details or window congestion, it may be issued at a later date.

If it is not issued on the same day, you will need to bring the following documents when receiving your new Residence Card at a later date:

  • Application Acceptance Slip

  • Passport (or Certificate of Status of Residence)

  • Identification document, etc.


If You Find the Lost Residence Card Later

If you find your old lost Residence Card after receiving a newly reissued Residence Card, you must return the old Residence Card within 14 days from the date it was found.
