The visa that the stepchild should apply for depends on the visa of the parent (of the birth parent).
1. Japanese spouse visa→ Long-term resident visa
2. Long-term resident visa→ Long-term resident visa
3. Dependent family visa →Designated Activity visa
Common requirements to all visas.
・The parents intend to live with the child.
The child must
・Be the biological child of the spouse (birth parent).
・Be a minor.
・Be unmarried.
・Be not capable of supporting himself/herself and be supported of his/her parents.
In addition, as with other visas, the parents' financial ability and past record of support are also subject to examination.
(If the applicant has adopted a child, he/she will be eligible for a family stay visa.)
For the Designated Activities Visa (*3.), if the child resides overseas, an application for change of status of residence will be filed after the child is invited in a short stay visa.
